Academics
WWakefield Country Day School has an academics-first policy. Most of Wakefield's teachers hold advanced degrees in their chosen fields and enjoy challenging their small, well-disciplined classes with the best of western civilization in the arts, humanities, mathematics, and science. Employing a classical approach to education allows the faculty to move students beyond testing prowess, and helps students delve more deeply into larger questions relating to the subjects at hand. The faculty challenges the students to question, research, write, and speak in a reflective manner, appropriate to their level of development. As a result, Wakefield has become internationally known for its overall academic excellence and especially its language arts program. Advanced coursework in mathematics and science contribute to the rigor and quality of the instructional program.
Wakefield Country Day School offers several diplomas based on 27 to 35 credits and reflecting a variety of concentrations in science, classical studies, and the arts. The results of the program speak for themselves. Our students score well above the national mean for SAT scores and above the average of Virginia Independent Schools. In addition, WCDS graduates have an unbroken tradition of 100 percent 4-year college acceptance, with over 40 percent of the class of 2009 designated as AP scholars.
